More Encouragement

I've been studying about Elijah lately and it was so encouraging that I wanted to share it with you. The story begins in 1 Kings 17 with Elijah confronting King Ahab and telling him that there'd be no rain for the next 3 years. He said there'd not only be no rain, but that there wouldn't even be any dew on the ground for all that time, and that the rain would not come again until he said it would. Of course this would cause a horrible drought, which would in turn cause a horrible famine throughout the land. As soon as he delivered the message from the Lord, the Lord told him to go to a specific place by a brook where He had arranged for the ravens to bring him food.

One of the first things I noticed in the story was that the Lord didn't give Elijah a 3 year plan. Instead, He gave him simple one step directions with enough information to carry out those instructions. He told him to go tell the King what He'd said, and it wasn't until after He'd given the King the message that God then told him where to go next. And that was important for Elijah because the King didn't like what he'd been told and as soon as he gathered his wits about him, he wanted to kill Elijah.

So Elijah went to the area the Lord had told him too and as promised, the Lord had ravens provide food for him each day. Again we see that Elijah was provided for daily...not for weeks or months or years in advance. There wasn't a stockpile of food waiting or him either. Nor was he given a nice palace to live in and a big river to get his water from. Instead he had to camp out and make do with a small brook of water that could dry up at any time. I say, "make do", yet Elijah always had more then enough to eat and drink. He was warm when it was cold and cool when it was hot. The point being that God didn't provide him with abundance so that he wouldn't be tempted to rest, or count on the gifts or blessings, but instead would rest, count on, Him.

That's one of the tendencies of our sin nature...to begin to rely on the blessing instead of on the giver of the blessing. Like our pay checks -regardless of where they come from such as our job, unemployment, social security, or whatever, we tend to count on them; rely on them. We forget that our boss, the government or whoever, isn't really the one providing those checks - God is! When God does give us an abundance, we tend to forget Him. We don't need Him then, or so we think. Such as when we have a good secure job and a regular pay check that enables us to pay our bills and have some left over. After a very short time, we forget that this is a blessing directly from God. We tend to consider our pay check, and even our job, as something we've earned and that we deserve instead. While we may still pray and read our bibles, we certainly don't spend time in heartfelt prayer pleading with God, because we don't see any need to do so. We see ourselves as being our own provision with our safe secure job and steady pay check. At least we do till they stop for some reason. When that happens, after we complain and gripe about it, we'll finally turn to God and start pleading with Him in prayer for help. At some point then, we hopefully realize that our jobs and pay checks had become false gods for us, and repent.

To prevent this from happening with Elijah, God didn't give him an abundance. The Lord kept things so that Elijah would have to constantly rely on Him. It was part of his training for the job the Lord had for him in the future. Because we know the story, we know that Elijah is going to do some really awesome miracles; miracles that had never been done before and as big and as profuse as hadn't been seen since the exodus.
Elijah needed to grow in faith In order to do things, (which of course he knew nothing about) and keeping Elijah dependent on Him that way, is what caused his faith to grow.

I see this in my own life right now. I'm dependent on God for everything just like Elijah is. The false gods have been kicked out and I've repented of them. Now I'm not just trying to get through one day at a time, instead I'm learning to enjoy living a day at a time with the Lord as my provision. I'm learning to literally rest in Him, the way Elijah learned to do at that brook. To abide in Him every day knowing that my needs will be met and that all I have to do is trust and obey.

Funny isn't it? All we ever have to do is trust and obey, yet we let our lives get so cluttered with "stuff" that we forget. So the Lord brings us back to the beginning once again. Remember that verse, "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord"? Just as the Lord had big plans for Elijah and was preparing him so he'd be able to handle them, so He's also preparing us for our future, and in the same way. I have a feeling that He's got some pretty big plans for us too!

Numbers 14's Amazing Lessons!

I have to share this with you! My personal study time was about Numbers 14 this morning and I just about couldn't believe my eyes. Let me share some with you and then you can read the chapter for yourself and see what the Lord says to you about it.

Moses has led the Jew's out of Egypt, and the Lord has given them his laws to live by and told them how to build the ark of the covenant, which they did. He told them how to worship Him and gave them the feasts they were to keep etc. He performed many, many wonders and miracles for them over the last two years since freeing them. In fact, it was about 2 years and almost 3 months since He'd led them out of Egypt when chapters 10-14 take place, and there'd been almost constant miracles during that time as they learned what God expected of them and what He promised in return. God was preparing them, growing them up so they'd be ready to enter the Promised Land as His children when they got there. (just like He is preparing us in this life so we'll be ready to enter our promised land in Heaven)

In chapter 11, The Lord has them begin the journey. It's just a short 3 day one so they can practice how to set up and break down the tabernacle and the rest of the camp and do things orderly. And trouble starts...they begin to complain. They're tired of their miraculous food and want meat instead. This really makes God angry! How dare they! (I've written a lot in the study forum about how complaining about anything or anyone is actually complaining against the Lord and is not a good thing to do! ) God was so angry that after he provided yet another miracle to meet their new demands, He killed a whole lot of them right then and there while they enjoying the new miracle!

Then, just days later, in chapter 12, Aaron and Miriam begin to criticize Moses and insinuate that because of who he married, he wasn't fit to be God's spokesman, or at least not His only one...that they were holier then he was, etc... Talk about angry! Oh boy, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere near there! God came down "immediately" to handle that one! He told them off good and then struck Miriam with Leprosy and told Arron to put her outside the camp as she was now unclean. But Moses intervened and prayed for her so the Lord relented a little bit... this is what He said:
Numbers 12:14The Lord replied to Moses, “If her father had spit in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.” * So, basically, Miriam got put in "time out" for a week to think about what she'd done. Finally, in chapter 13, they're ready to begin exploring the first part of the land they'll be taking over and God has them send out spies to learn the lay of the land. They're gone for 40 days. I'm sure you know the story...they come back and tell the people that the land itself is fantastic, just like God said it would be, BUT there's no way they could ever win a war with them, no matter what the Lord said. All but two of the spies give that same report, but Joshua and Caleb stand firm for the Lord and urge the people to listen to Him. Chapter 13 ends with the spies still talking to the people and giving them bad advice.

Now comes chapter 14. The people are in open rebellion now. They're scared to death and worried. They've decided that the hard life they lived in Egypt as slaves with evil masters, was preferable to declaring a war they couldn't win. They've obviously decided that God is a liar and in spite of the constant miracles and provision and love they'd seen for the last couple of years, that He had only brought them here to kill them all off. So He's not only a liar, but He's evil too....not to mention sneaky....and stupid if He thinks they won't realize it! What's the "root sin" they're acting out now? It's the sin of unbelief. They're believing what other people say instead of what God has said. They're believing what their eyes see instead of what the Lord says is true. Instead of taking their thoughts, feelings and imaginations captive, they're dwelling on "what if's" and "possibilities" that they've made up in their minds and imagining all kinds of possible terrible outcomes were they to obey God. Here's some of what they came up with:

Numbers 14:2–4 —All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! *Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” *And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” *

Can you believe it????? But then again, how dare we judge them since we do exactly the same thing ourselves... Our precious Lord knows this and that's one reason He includes this in His Word; so we can learn by their mistakes and not have to keep making the same mistake ourselves.

As you can imagine, God was angrier then ever now and was ready to wipe out the entire 2 million or so adults in the camp, except for Moses, Aaron, Joshua and Caleb of course, since as soon as they saw what was happening, they fell on their faces and began to alternately pray and talk sense into the people.

Did anyone listen? Of course not! In fact, they got angry and wee going to stone them! I didn't think the Lord could get any angrier then He already was, but that did it! He was going to wipe them all out, but Moses never stopped asking Him to forgive them, so He relented to a degree.... Like any good Father, He was going to make sure they learned a lesson from their sins, and since He is not just a good Father, but is perfect, right and fair in all He does.

I want to also explain something about when I say God was angry. Yes, God does get angry at us, but there's a big difference in His anger and ours. (like there's a difference in His love and ours) The only kind of anger God has is righteous anger, and He obeys His own laws about everything, including anger. That means that as angry as He might get, He never reacts in anger. When He disciplines or punishes someone or a group, He does it in love, not anger. For us to do that, would mean we'd need some "cooling off time" first, but being God and being perfect, He doesn't need to cool off. He's always in complete control of His emotions. It can get sticky when we talk about the Lord's emotions, because of course He does have feelings, but we tend to associate every feeling with how we feel it and how we handle it, and that's not true of God, it's only true of us. So, while we'd get furious in a situation like this and instantly react and start pounding the person or persons, God doesn't. He listens to Moses and the others with him.

Then He explained what He was going to do:

Numbers 14:20–23 —The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. *Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth, *not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times— *not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. *

He tells Moses to tell the people this:
Numbers 14:28–35 —So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very things I heard you say: *In this desert your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. *Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. *As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. *But you—your bodies will fall in this desert. *Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert. *For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ *I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this desert; here they will die.” *

I can't read that second line I underlined without almost weeping every time. "As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected" All I can hear, is my Father's broken heart and horror that anyone would ever think that He would harm a child! How could they think such a thing after all He'd shown them of Himself, of His heart for them? His love, care, and tender concern? After He Himself had taught them about love, how to care for and teach their children so they'd grow up to be upstanding responsible people living under His blessings? Had they been sleep walking for the last two years??? Even lately when He'd had to discipline and/or punish some of the adults, He'd always told them and explained why first, and had never done anything in anger or needlessly. He'd even been the one to teach them what kinds of consequences there were for sinning in the first place!

Well, you can probably guess what happened next. The people realized, at least to some extent, their sin and admitted it. But then, even in confessing that sin, they sinned again! Of course, they were now scared because of what God had told them was now going to happen, so they were trying to find a way around it. Like a child trying to get their time out or grounding reduced, they told Moses that they realized they'd sinned by not being obedient and doing what God said, so now they'd go do it. There! That would make everything all better wouldn't it? They'd go attack those towns right now! They'd missed the whole point... or at least a good portion of it.

They'd allowed their thoughts to run wild and relied on their own faulty hearts, and minds, ("wisdom"), instead of listening to God and those He'd placed in authority over them. They decided that at least in this situation, they obviously knew what was "best" for them, and were going to base their decisions on that. They'd manipulate things to happen the way they wanted them to...

Moses did his best to stop them...He told them not to go because God would NOT be with them and they'd all die!

Numbers 14:41–43 —But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed! *Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies, *for the Amalekites and Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword.” *

And so this is how chapter 14 ends:

Numbers 14:44–45 —Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the high hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp. *Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah. *

Although just a short time ago they had again vowed to do all the Lord had said.
See how fickle our hearts and minds are? How prone to sin? The Lord warns us truly when He tells us that our hearts are deceitful! We truly do need to train our hearts and minds to think the Truth and focus on that and not the illusions of this evil world. God loves us; He is our Father! The perfect Father who will never abandon us and He has wonderful plans for our future that He cannot wait to fulfill for us! Let's trust Him, He certainly deserves at least that much from us doesn't He?

From the heights of revelation to the valley of idolatry

I've spent the last several weeks studying Exodus 19 - 32 and have learned so much that it's unbelievable. Wow! The Lord sure does pack a lot into a little, that's for sure! I wanted to share a few truths that the Lord taught me and showed me over the last few days with you guys too.

First let me refresh your memories of what this portion of scripture is all about. Moses has led the Israelites out of Egypt and to Sinai, where the Lord announced that He would speak to all the people there. The people became so terrified when they saw the manifestations of God that they begged Moses to speak to them himself instead of God because they were afraid of Him. That's always made me feel sad when I read that, because even back then, God wanted a personal relationship with each of the people, but like we so often do, they preferred to follow a man instead.
That's in Exodus 20:18–21 if you'd like to read it for yourself.

In the next several chapters, the Lord, continuing to speak to Moses so the people could hear Him, told them what His expectations of them were, since they were now His People. He explained to them, how they were to be different from the rest of the world, and what that meant for them. At night, Moses wrote down everything the Lord had said to them. When the Lord had finished speaking all his laws to them, the people responded to Him saying that they would do all that He required. After that, Moses built an alter and made a sacrifice, and then read all he'd written down to the people. The people again responded saying they would do all that he'd said. Then sprinkling the blood from the sacrifice, both on the alter and on the people, Moses confirmed the covenant between them and the Lord.

Then the Lord told Moses that he was to come the rest of the way up the mountain so the Lord could give him the laws written on stone tablets and explain them to Moses more. So Moses appointed Aaron to be in charge in his absence and went up the mountain the rest of the way and into the glowing cloud that looked to the people like a consuming fire.
(This had been there the entire time, it didn't just suddenly appear; and the people knew that the Lord was in the "cloud".)

In the next 5 chapters, God explains to Moses how the people are to worship Him and more of His laws.
In the meantime, the people were at the bottom of the mountain, just relaxing and doing their daily routines. I would imagine that for quite some time they probably couldn't think of much else except all the miracles they'd seen and experienced since leaving Egypt, and especially hearing from God themselves most recently! Wouldn't it have been interesting to have been able to listen in to them as they spoke to each other about it all? It's hard to imagine going back to "normal routines" after such miraculous things had happened and after hearing from God Himself! And yet, we not only do, we also seem to somehow forget the miracles we've experienced where the Lord our God has shown us His power and might and His great love for us. As you can tell, I've been thinking about this for some time as I also posted the thread Have you experienced or seen a major miracle? the other day in hopes of talking more about this.

I also imagined what it might have been like for Moses, up on the mountain, inside the cloud...speaking to the Lord so intimately as He did, for such a long period of time. (40 days straight!) He spoke to God the way a person speaks to a friend. The bible even says it that same way a little bit later in Exodus 33:11. I've always felt that the way Moses and the other people in the bible (like Abraham, David, etc) spoke to the Lord were examples for us to follow, and shows us the way the Lord wants to interact with us all the time, not just during times we set aside to "pray" or on Sundays. It's obvious that those 40 days changed Moses even more, for we see the spiritual growth in him by how he reacts when the Lord tells him what the people have been up to while they've been chatting. But, I'm getting ahead of myself...

At some point, the people, who I'm sure had been excitedly talking about all the miracles and what the Lord had in store for their future, began to get discontented. They began to get tired of waiting for Moses to return. They wanted to be getting on their way to this "promised land" not sitting on their behinds waiting. But how did they go from fear of God, to excitement and wonder at all that had happened, and agreeing to do all He asked of them, to discontent and complaining all within 40 days???

I'd always wondered about that, and this time as I studied, I was determined to find out, partly because I knew that, much as I hate to admit it, I've often done the very same thing.

Before I get into what caused the people to become so discontented, I first want to share what they did about it, because this too unfortunately reflects a lot on how we often act.

First they became discontented and began complaining about how things were going as I've already said. After more days of talking about it, they went to Aaron, who Moses had left in charge and actually asked him to make them an idol! Now, remember, 39 days earlier they had stood fearfully listening to God Himself speak to them and replied that they would obey Him. He had given them His 10 commandments at that time, and if I recall, I'm pretty sure those said they weren't to make any idols!

Part 2

OK, to understand how they could have gone so wrong so fast, we need to remember where they came from to start with. They'd been living in Egypt as slaves all their lives before now and had been immersed in Egyptian religion and philosophy and their worldview all that time too. They remembered their heritage and had held onto it all during their captivity which I'm quite sure was due to the Lord's intervention on their behalf, but they couldn't avoid hearing and knowing the worldview, religion and philosophy of the Egyptians anymore then we can avoid the worldview of the society we've been born into. But if we go all the way back to when they were getting ready to actually march out of Egypt, we remember that they weren't the only ones to leave! Some Egyptians came with them! You can find that in Exodus 12:38. One little verse that we tend to overlook and never think about again!

We aren't told who the other people were, although they had to be Egyptians or at least living in Egypt at the time, and for some reason wanted to go with the Jews. Perhaps they had learned to fear the One True God because of all the plagues that God brought down on Egypt to make the Pharaoh let them go. Maybe they figured they'd be better off with the Jew's then staying home, maybe some of them had close relationships with the Jews and didn't want to be away from them. We don't know though so all we can do is guess. But, if you think back to when they were traveling from Egypt to Sinai, where they are now, they frequently complained about the conditions they were living in and angered God each time. It started just 3 days after crossing the red sea and singing God's praises! And the complaining became a habit for them. I can't remember at the moment exactly where the Lord gives us a hint about this, but at some point when they were complaining we learn that it's actually the others that started it, not the Jews. (It's somewhere between Ex 12 and Ex 32) That certainly doesn't take any blame from the Jews for following such bad examples, but it does help explain how it began.

Think of how it is in our own lives and I think you'll see what happened. We know how God wants us to live, but at the same time were immersed in the worldview around us which is ruled by Satan. We can avoid temptation by keeping ourselves away from things that are bad influences, but what happens when, say a co worker, or a neighbor who isn't saved, comes to you and begins complaining about what's been happening lately? Unless we're alert and aware of Satan's schemes, we often fall right into the trap that's been laid and wind up complaining right along with them, don't we? And if that person or persons are around us constantly, then pretty soon, we tend to start acting just like they do. That's one reason the Lord warns us that bad company corrupts good morals.

Here again we see the Truth of God which is so different then the truth the world teaches us. The world tells us that everyone is basically good, so if a good person hangs around a bad person, the bad person will start acting more like the good person. But the Lord tells us it doesn't work that way at all, because people aren't basically good, but are basically evil and will always tend to lean toward their sin nature as that's natural for them.
This is why the Lord insisted that the Israelites not intermarry with others and that they not have anything to do with Gentiles other then to tell them about Him. Instead they were to represent Him to the Gentiles and show them (us) what God required from us and what God gave in return; but they were never to become close with any Gentile that hadn't converted to Judaism. Later, the priests took God's Word too far and added to it, making up a bunch of laws and leading the Jews to sin and isolate themselves from the world. So instead of being God's representatives to the world, they became snobs and thought and acted as though they were better then anyone else. (even though God had told them and shown them repeatedly that they weren't!)

Back to the point though, these "others" that came with the Jews, began complaining whenever they were afraid. They didn't have the background of growing up knowing about the Lord that the Jews had, so we can give them a bit of a break there. This was all pretty new to them, but still....Did you notice that every time they complained it was because of fear? Yep. If you read about their trip to Sinai, you'll see that every time there was a "problem" (in their minds), instead of facing it with faith that the Lord who was leading them would provide, they began to worry, and then to fear and then to complain, all of which are sins. Sin is like a disease in that it's infectious and will infect everyone around if they aren't alert. No matter how many miracles the Lord did for them to provide for their needs, when each new situation arose they met it the same way and the whole community followed their lead.

It was the same way this time. Now after talking about these miracles, they began to worry that Moses hadn't returned yet. A little more time passes and during that time, they focused not on the miracles or on God, or on what Moses or God had told them before He left, not even on the miraculous "cloud" that was over the place on the top of the mountain where Moses was with the Lord. No, they focused on their fear - that Moses wouldn't return. That something happened to him. Now what would they do? Who would talk to God for them? And they became afraid and complained. Realizing that has really made me take a much harder look at when I complain!

So they complain and say that Moses has been gone so long and they don't even know if he will return or what's happened to him, and ask Aaron to make them a god that they can see and follow since they obviously can't follow Moses as he's not there. I've always thought that they were asking Moses to literally make them a god...like the gods the Egyptians worshiped, but now I no longer think so. Let me explain why.

Aaron evidently caved in to peer pressure although as the leader in charge while Moses was gone, He should have stood up to them, calmed them down and told them to wait on the Lord and have faith. He took all their jewelry they had on and made it into a calf and told them that would be their god and made an alter and everything for it. But then, he told them that the next day they would have a festival "to the Lord" and that's exactly what they did!
(Exodus 32:5–6) As I continued to read, the more I saw what they were doing...the very same thing that happens today and the very thing that the Antichrist and false prophet will use to unify all religions! Later, when I read all the commentaries (and this time I did read every single one LOL) I was surprised to find that most of them agreed with me and only a couple thought they were actually worshiping a false god.

Before I can explain what they did, you have to know what they did: they held a worship service, sacrificing offerings, and then sat down to eat and drink together-although in this case it was more then that, it was more like a wild party and orgy that happened! So where did they get the idea that was the way to worship the One True God? From the culture they grew up in of course! Basically, they wanted to worship God, but they wanted something to look at, something solid they could see while they did so, so they had the calf made. This wasn't anything new. We all know that's the norm for many religions even now, including some who dare call themselves Christian! But they didn't yet know how God wanted to be worshiped. All they had to go on were the patriarchs, their fathers of old, and they had sacrificed to God, so that's what they decided to do. But they also added a bit more to it. The Egyptians and other religions always incorporated getting drunk as a skunk and having wild parties and sex with everyone as part of their worship, so apparently they decided that this would be a great way to let off some steam and chose to do this as part of their worship too. I'm sure they had lots of great excuses as to why it should be that way, one probably being that other people did it that way. You guys will probably laugh at me, but I even learned a new word that applies to this: ‎Syncretism (attempt to unite and harmonize things especially without critical examination or logical unity) brought about the ludicrous combination of an idol, an altar, and a festal celebration held in a bizarre attempt to honor the true God. The MacArthur study Bible

Now do you see why I said we do the same thing today or rather some do? You just have to go look in the "today's teachers" forum and you'll find it happens every day now too. What's kind of scary is that many of the things that they're bringing into our churches are designed specifically to keep us from thinking or critically examining ideas! I think that's because this is what the Antichrist and false prophet will use to unify all the religions. It certainly wouldn't work at all if the people were used to being bereans or thinking and examining things critically and carefully to be sure they're scriptural. Instead the false teachers tell people to go by feelings and to empty their minds, not to be critical, etc. Well that's what the Jews did and that's what got them in so much trouble! They used no discernment! God was more then just a little upset with them about this!

God was so angry that He was going to kill every single one of them and make a nation from Moses' descendants instead! And that's exactly what He told Moses! What if Moses had gone along with Him???? But during all the time He'd been spending with God, Moses had grown tremendously. He was a changed man. Instead of thinking of himself, he grieved for his people. He found that he actually loved them! This was most likely also a test for Moses to see what he would do and he passed it with flying colors! Of course God knew he would pass the test, but I'm sure that if you'd asked Moses a few days earlier, that he wouldn't have been real sure about it. So God let him find out just how much he'd grown and changed. That's what a lot of God's tests do for us. They show us how strong we're becoming. In Exodus 32:11–13 we see a wonderful example of God's love having been poured out into Moses' heart as he intercedes for the people's sin. It reminds me of how Paul loved both the Jews and all those he'd led to Christ as well. As far as I know, Paul and Moses are the only ones that offered their lives in exchange for the lives of their people like this. Don't quote me on that though, as I'm not sure that's accurate. It's just all I can think of off hand. Of course we know the Lord accepted his prayer and didn't wipe them all out, but they still paid a very heavy price for their sin.

Part 3

What caused them to go from the heights of revelation to the valley of idolatry then? Can we summarize that, so we can beware of it in our own lives?

The first thing I noticed was the warning that we're all programmed if you will, by the world before we're saved. Once we become saved, our job is to become programmed by God's Word and His ways instead of the world. Personally, I tend to look at myself and how I'm doing that way as though I'm weighing it on scales with the world's ways and worldview on one side and God's Word and His way on the other side. My goal is for the side with God's Word and His ways to be heavier then the side with the world's ways on it. God calls this, growing in our faith and says that as we grow in our faith, it strengthens that new nature we have. So quite literally as we grow our sin nature exerts less influence on us and our new nature exerts more influence on us. That's why it's so very, very important that we study His Word daily with Him. We need our new nature to get stronger and stay stronger then our sin nature and that sin nature is being fed daily, constantly by the things other people say to us, the TV, radio, songs, movies, books we read, etc. We simply can't escape that as long as we're living in this body. So to counter that, we have to feed our new nature daily too.

What happened to the Israelites was that they quickly fell back into the worlds ways when they became impatient, scared, or worried. Their old natures were still in charge, especially during emotional times. And they had the others that had come with them to encourage that old nature too, and that's another thing we can watch out for.

When we're around people that aren't saved, we need to keep in the very front of our minds that no matter how much we like them, they are the enemy of our God and our enemy too, although they may not realize it. Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for them and we should most certainly do that too. He died for us when we were still His enemies so we need to care for them in that same way, but at the same time, not allowing them to influence us at all. We need to be very alert when we're around the unsaved, so we don't get sucked into the world's way of thinking about things.

While we can and should love and care for them, help them and do all we can for them, we can't really be real close to them and be with them constantly as that would be very stressful for us. Instead we need to have more fellowship with others who are also saved so we can relax our guard at least a little and enjoy being with others we can share our hearts with, and who can encourage us and hold us accountable too. The problem the Israelites had was that they didn't keep their guard up or keep in mind the difference between themselves and those who didn't have any experience with God at all other then what they'd experienced together since leaving Egypt. Perhaps if they had worked harder at teaching them what they knew about God, they might not have fallen so far or so hard like they did.

What I try to remind myself about the difference between me and the unsaved and the peril I'm in when with them, is that it would be a lot like asking an uneducated janitor for advice about my finances and accepting that they knew just as much as a financial adviser would. Both may be good people, but you sure don't want to bet your retirement on the janitors advice! That's how it is with the saved and unsaved. Both may seem to be good people, but you sure don't want to take the advice or worldview of the unsaved person to heart because regardless of how nice they are, they are still the child of the devil and your enemy and the enemy of your Savior. So I try to make my mind set such that I see my job with an unsaved person that I like to be one of teaching them as much as I can about God and hopefully getting them to come over to my side so I can finally really be friends with them.

Next you can hardly avoid realizing that their feelings are what started this whole thing. They began feeling impatient, worried, etc. and began focusing on that instead of focusing on what they already knew about God and all the miracles they'd experienced. That tells me again that we need to control our thoughts and emotions and not let them control us. If when they had started feeling impatient and worried, they had begun to start thinking about God and all He'd done and the laws He'd given them instead, they would have soon been reassured that there was nothing to be impatient or worried about. Another way of looking at it would be to see that they were focused on themselves, what they wanted, instead of focusing on God and what he wanted. That too is a good way to ensure that we keep our thoughts and emotions in control so we don't sin. To me, it seemed like they were acting like spoiled children demanding that they get what they wanted, when they wanted, how they wanted and not caring about anything or anyone other than themselves.
Just like we do all the time.

Does it feel like you've been cursed???

The Lord reminded me about this study last night. You all know that I've been going through a LOT of trials this last 14 months or so. It seems never ending. In fact, I saw an update on one of our members prayer requests who is also going through trials, where they said it was so bad that they felt like they'd been cursed. That thought had crossed my mind at one of my low points too, and I've heard that from others as well. I took it to the Father though and He assured me it wasn't so and I know that not one of us here on FH have been cursed, regardless of how many or how bad our trials have been lately or how long they've been going on.

You guys know I hope, that I keep you in my prayers and I have truly asked the Lord about the trials we're each going through. If nothing else, I want you to each know absolutely for sure that you are NOT cursed! The Lord our God did not sacrifice His life so He could then turn around and curse us. He LOVES us! Over and over in His Word we're assured of His love and tender care. He tells us that we should realize that if He was willing to go through that torture, death and separation from the Father because of His love for us, that He most certainly is not going to hurt us or withhold anything good from us! Instead, He says He will pour out His blessings on us abundantly so that we have ALL we need.

OK. So where are those blessings?
Well my friends, I'm afraid that this is part of the price we pay for living in the last days. (notice I say, "last days" and not "end times")
It's not that the Lord is withholding His blessings, in fact, He's pouring them out on us even right this moment. The difference is that He wants and needs us to focus on the eternal now instead of the physical, earthly world. Of course, He's always wanted that for all His children since the beginning, but now, time is of the essence and there is no time to waste. These are the very last days of the Age of Grace. Like any earthly Father, He wants His children to be prepared to take up their responsibilities so they can enjoy their eternal life to the fullest, when they graduate from this "school" called life, we're currently in.

See, we're not the only ones going through these trials - even the unsaved are going through them because the time of the Tribulation is getting closer.
He really meant it when He tells us not to think it's strange that we're having to go through so much right now. We need to take to heart what He tells us in that passage that begins with 1 Peter 4:12, realizing that He is not punishing us, but rather, in His love, He will use all that's happening to us for our good and His glory. Not only that, He also tells us that He will stand beside us and strengthen us and help us through this time. He says He will give us wisdom to understand what's happening and how we should react to it if we will ask Him.

My friends, His Word is FULL of His promises to us for this specific time of trials. All we have to do is open it and read them to be comforted and realize again His great love for us and all the help He makes available to us. The sad thing is that too often we cry out to Him, begging Him for help, and think He hasn't answered us, but He has! The help is right there..in His Word! He's blessed us with EVERY spiritual blessing - but we have to know what they are in order to use them! That means studying His Word! He says He has given us everything we need to live this life victoriously in Him, and He doesn't lie! In fact He says He has enriched us in EVERY way! He doesn't just give us a little blessing here and there, but He literally pours His blessings out on us every single day.

Yes, we're living in the last days; which translates to mean trials for everyone right now, believer and unbeliever alike. What does the unbeliever have for help? Nothing... they have no help, no hope. After these trials they will spend eternity in Hell. Unless of course we tell them where they can get help and they accept our Lord as theirs. As for us though, we can rejoice even in the midst of these trials because we have God's help to get through them! He strengthens us to endure, He teaches and guides us so that we can understand what's happening and why, and how to react, He encourages us, comforts us, and provides all we need spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and even physically to get through these trials. He tells us that every trial we go through here, earns glory for us in Heaven. It's kind of like having a savings account in Heaven and we're putting money into it with each trial we go through. And of course, best of all, we know that we will live forever with Him in Heaven, with no more trials ever!

So take heart my friends. We have not been abandoned. Our God loves and cherishes us and would never ever do anything to hurt us. While we have to go through trials now just like the rest of the world, we have His help to get through them, and the promise of an absolutely fantastic future ahead, which should encourage us greatly. So let's open His Word together and search His Word with His help and guidance and find the exact promises and help He has for each of us for our particular needs right now. I'll post some at the end of this for us.

Part 2:  Still Feeling Cursed?

I've been studying in Deuteronomy now and today the Lord showed me something that really opened my eyes yet again to how much He loves and cares for us. I thought this might also help others who feel like everything that can go wrong is... First let me post the scriptures and then what He showed me about how they pertain to us right now.

Deuteronomy 8:1–9 —Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the Lord promised on oath to your forefathers. *Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. *He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. *Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. *Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you. *Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and revering him. *For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; *a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; *a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. *

Because I started my studies with Genesis 1 and have been reading straight through, I'm familiar with all that happened to them in the desert. In case there's some who don't remember, the Israelites continuously sinned against the Lord from the moment He got them out of Egypt. It seemed like every time He turned around they were doing something that they knew was an abomination to Him! We're not talking about what we'd think of as "little sins", though they did that too, we're talking major sin here! The kind that's like spitting in God's face! The Lord finally had His fill of it and decreed that because of their sin He wouldn't let them settle in the promised land. He used their own words against them and told them only their children would be allowed into the land and that they themselves would all have to wander in the desert for the next 40 years till they were all dead, and only then would the children be allowed to possess the land He'd promised them.

If anyone had a right to be angry or vindictive at this point, God did! But even though He disciplined them by not allowing them to enter the land, He didn't abandon them! Where I would have said, "you made your bed, now lay in it" and left, He stuck around and provided for their every need!

When we read the story about this, we often tend to focus on the part of God saying they'd all die in the desert, and think of it as a bad thing. But the fact that they would die wasn't the punishment! Everyone dies sooner or later. The punishment was not being able to settle in their own land.

What I realized was that without God's provision and help, those people would most likely all have died within the first year if not the first month!
Not only that, but they'd have died horrible deaths from starvation, heat, exposure, sickness, etc. The ONLY reason they didn't die, was because the Lord stayed with them and took care of them, the way a loving father would care for his wayward child. He provided food and water for them, He made sure they had clothing that kept them covered, yet cool during the heat and warm during the cold nights. He made sure they all had shelter and that they were camped in the safest and best places in the area. He provided their shoes so their feet wouldn't get sore or hurt.

Think about it....for 40 years the Lord did this... the children grew so would have normally needed new clothes and shoes frequently. New children were born needing clothing and eventually shoes. Even the parents would have needed new clothes and shoes not just because theirs had worn out but because as we get up there in age, we often "shrink" some and then need a smaller size. And even the younger adults could easily have needed a bigger size of clothes and shoes as they built up muscle from all their walking. Where did they get the clothes for those new babies? Where did they get the blankets to wrap them in? How did they get larger sizes or smaller sizes for each other when needed? The Lord God they had insulted and sinned against over and over again, provided it for them!

Can you believe it? I mean, really, that's just incredible that He would do that for them! They'd shown Him nothing but contempt for the most part. Oh sure, they thanked Him and were glad He got them out of Egypt, but that attitude didn't even last a month before they were accusing Him of bringing them out of Egypt so He could torture them and kill them! Why in the world would the Lord go to this trouble for them then? Simply because He loved them. But God's definition of love is very different from the world's definition. When we talk about "love", we're usually talking about a feeling; but when God speaks of love, He's talking about a decision, a choice to commit Himself to care for another. Again, I don't mean that He commits to "feel" warm mushy feelings for us. I mean He commits Himself to care for our needs and do what's best for us regardless of whether or not we deserve it. He explains what love is really about in 1 Cor 13 so we can understand His love better.

The Lord had told the Israelites from the start that He hadn't chosen them because they were somehow special or bigger, or stronger or more "loveable" then anyone else, so that's also not why He didn't abandon them. The reason He didn't abandon them and that He took such tender care of them all those years was because He loved them and that's what love does.

Keep in mind too that the average life span back then wasn't what it is now. If you recall, the average person only lived to be around 40-45 years old. These adults were already all over 20 years old when God sentenced them to wander for 40 years, so the Lord actually allowed the majority of them to live out what for them was a long life. They not only lived nice long lives, but lived them without sickness or pain! You know what that reminds me of? You'll laugh, but it reminds me of the only time I was ever "grounded" by my parents. I think I was about 8 years old. I have to laugh every time I think about it because it was so very obvious at the time that my punishment literally did hurt my parents more then it hurt me. Every single day when my dad came home from work, he'd bring me a present! It was always something that I could use to amuse myself during my punishment . (my favorite was the camera he got me) I remember too overhearing my parents talking about it one night when I was supposed to be asleep, and hearing my dad tell my mom how it just broke his heart because he loved me and hated to see me punished. Of course my mom agreed, but they also agreed that they couldn't keep buying me presents either or I'd never learn my lesson. They didn't know that I'd learned a lot more then the lesson they had intended me to learn... I'd learned about love too. They didn't know it, but they were acting an awful lot like the Lord does.

He doesn't like to discipline us. Nor is He out to get us or always looking for something to punish us for. He is the perfect loving Father. He only disciplines us when He has to, and even then He never abandons us, but instead helps, guides, comforts, and provides for us even during the discipline. You know what? He loves us so much and hates to see us in the messed up state we're in, that He even took our biggest punishment on Himself!

We may feel like we're wandering in the desert right now and that it's lasted an awfully long time, but I can guarantee you that the Lord our God who died for us, is right here with us. He's carrying us when we get tired, providing all the clothing, shoes, food, water, shelter, and all that we need, guiding us so that we miss the worst detours, and when we finally sleep at night, He gently comes in and tucks us in, kissing us good night and whispering to us: "I love you my child, hold on, it will all be over soon"...

And you know what we do each day when we wake up? (OK, what I do, as I can't speak for you guys) I throw another tantrum! I don't want the oatmeal, I want bacon and eggs! No! I don't want to wear that old dress, I want a blue one and I don't care that you made it special just for me! And I most certainly don't want to pay my bills with the money you give me because then I won't be able to waste any on that candy I want to buy; and don't give me any more of that water either, I want coffee - no, I want soda, or maybe both... yeah, both would be just right! And look what's happened now, the windshield in my car got broken -why did you let that happen if you care so much about me? Now what am I gonna do? Where will I get the money to fix it??? What? Oh, you'll take care of it? Oh, thanks! But when???? It needs to be done right NOW and I want this company to do it, not that other one.... and on and on we go till weary from all our fussing the Lord puts us to bed again, tucks us in, kisses us good night and tells us yet again
"I love you my child, hold on, it will all be over soon, For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land"...

No my friends, we're not cursed. We are the most blessed, most loved, most tenderly cared for people this world has ever seen! We really truly ARE God's children and heirs to more then we can even imagine! We live in this desert, a broken world, right now, but the Lord, our Father, won't abandon us here. Instead He will take tender care of us until the day He can finally give us all that He's prepared for us. Considering that He's already given His very life to buy us out of the mess we were in, we can know that He has something really spectacular planned for us when He does finally get us Home. Knowing this, really knowing it, I can only hope that maybe with His help I can stop acting like a naughty two year old throwing a tantrum and instead act more like someone who might be at least a little worthy of His love.
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. May the Lord direct our hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. In Jesus' Name, Amen (2 Thes 2:16–17 —2; Thes 3:5)
Let me leave us with a few promises so we have a place to start searching His Word from:

1 John 3:1How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
Romans 8:28–39 —
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. *For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. *And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. *What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? *He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? *Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. *Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. *Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? *As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” *No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. *For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, *neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. *

1 Corinthians 2:9However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”— *

Psalm 119:140–144 —Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. *Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. *Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. *Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. *Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live. *

1 Peter 4:12–19 —
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. *But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. *If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. *If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. *However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. *For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? *And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” *So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. *
2 Corinthians 4:17–18 —
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. *So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. *

1 Corinthians 1:5–9 —
For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all your speaking and in all your knowledge— *because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. *Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. *He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. *God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. *

2 Corinthians 1:20For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

But I don't have time to study the bible every day

There is nothing more important in this life then God and His Word and studying His Word with Him. There simply is no "reason" that's good enough to get away from it.

Yes, I don't have to "go to work" anymore and my children are all grown, but the sad thing is that God's Word shouldn't take second place to our jobs, families, etc. Let me share my heart with you about this... God and His Word should always come first, no matter how "busy" we are. That's what He means by the first commandment;

Exodus 20:3 (ESV) — 3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

Matthew 6:24 (ESV) — 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Matthew 22:37–40 (ESV) — 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

and He tells us that when we try to serve someone or something else before Him, that it won't work... When He says we're to love God will "all" our hearts and souls and minds, that means we're to make Him first and seek Him not for what He can do for us or give us, but instead for who He is, just because He is God. If we really understood that and understood how great and awesome He is, we would never be so brash as to think we could do without studying His Word every day...

Luke 12:5 (ESV) — 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

In our time especially the world has made us very complacent toward God; we really don't fear Him as we should. (The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom) We constantly make excuses for ourselves in how "busy" we are that we just don't have "time" to study or pray etc, and yet the real truth of the matter is that we don't have time NOT to study and pray!

I include myself in this as well. Yes, I study His Word for many hours a day now and before I was hurt, when I was working and raising my children, after I was saved, I studied it for an hour a day or more, but before that, during the years that I wasn't saved, though I always called myself a Christian, I didn't study His Word...I'd read it sometimes, but that's about it.

Don't get me wrong, when I was first saved, the Holy Spirit drew me to His Word, as He does all who are saved. But I too came up with lots of excuses... "I'm tired", "i don't feel well", I was interrupted", "I got busy", "I had to go to work" etc. He quickly showed me though that it was a matter of priorities and that I had to choose what was most important to me. Him or the world. I chose Him. He showed me too that I had to choose a time when I would be least likely to be interrupted and that I had to stick to it and insist on it even. And so I have. There were still many times when I "didn't feel like it", especially after I got hurt. Again He showed me it's a choice we have to make and it all depended on how important He was to me. Again I chose Him.

Each time I would feel like I was just too sick, too tired, or in too much pain to study, I would again choose Him; open my bible and proceed to talk to Him and study anyway. And you know what? He blessed me every single time! And I don't mean in some "spiritual" way, though He did that too, but before very long, I would realize that I wasn't feeling sick or in pain anymore, and was just enjoying being with Him and studying. Oh, the pain was still there, it was just somehow suppressed and I knew that if I focused on it, it would come back like a lion. See, the Lord will ALWAYS make a way, and bless us for being obedient. All we have to do is take the first step, be willing and obedient and open our bibles, after that, He takes over and He gives us the strength to study, He removes the fatigue, the illness, the pain, and puts it off to the side somewhere so it won't interfere with what we're doing. The more we do so, the more we'll want to, and the more we continue, the more enjoyable it will become, if we're including Him in the study and not doing it in our own so called intelligence and understanding.

I have felt for the last couple of years especially that our time here is running out and that if we're going to be ready for our Lord's return we've got to do it now, not tomorrow! That's why I've pushed, pleaded, begged and harassed people to get into His Word and join these studies now. Once He comes, it's all over and there won't be another chance. We can't make up for what we didn't do once we're in Heaven. God's Word teaches us about Him and His ways and His Will for us. If we don't study it we cannot do His Will, no matter how we try or want to. We can't be obedient to Him in anything if we're not studying His Word daily because that's how He speaks to us today. So many people think that they are, but they're only fooling themselves. God's Word teaches us everything we need to know and understand in order to live this life His Way, and it also corrects us when we're doing wrong. It doesn't just tell us we're doing wrong, it also shows us what we need to do to make it right. His Word enables us to grow to spiritual maturity which is what He wants for each of us. What so many don't seem to realize is that this isn't a suggestion, it's a command: and we can't handle His Word correctly if we don't study it.
2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV) — 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Plus, this isn't a command from Paul, it's a command from the Lord. Besides that, there are so more verses in the bible that tell us that we need to study His Word daily that it's mind blowing! I have a feeling they're there because this is so very important, and yet today, most people just don't pay attention. In fact, today, most people only hear the Word when they go to church and rarely open their bibles on their own, or if they do, it's to "read" them a few minutes. I don't know how many times I've seen the question "how much do we have to read every day"? What they're really saying is that they want to know what the very minimum is that they can get away with reading so that they've done their "duty". That's enough to make me cry! It's not just about duty, it's about love! After all the Lord did for us, we can't spare an hour a day to study His Word?????

I recently posted a thread about the things that show that someone is really saved,
and that might be an eye opener for some folks. The first thing is "a love for God". Let me share a quote from that thread:
Quote:
But the regenerate person is set to love the Lord with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. His delight is in the infinite excellencies of God. God is the first and highest affection of his renewed soul. God has become his chief happiness and source of satisfaction. He seeks after God and thirsts for the living God......True saving faith doesn't believe in Christ so that Christ will make one happy. The heart that truly loves God desires to please God and glorify Him. Jesus taught that if someone loved their father and mother more than they loved Christ, they were not worthy of Him.
John 1:14 (ESV) — 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus IS the Word. We often say how we would have loved to have been here when He was here, and yet He is in every word in our bibles and we ignore them! That just doesn't make any sense!

As you can see, this is a topic that's really important to me. (and I would hope and pray that it would be to everyone else as well) God's Word is sufficient for ALL we need, yet so many Christians ignore it. Or they'll study other people's books about what the bible says instead of study scripture for themselves and they consider that they're bible study. Well, I'm afraid that the Lord doesn't consider that Bible study. That's simply reading a book for pleasure, it's not studying His Word. When people have problems in their lives, what do they do? Do they run to the only one that can really help them and His Word? Nope. They run to the store and buy self help books, or even so called "Christian" self help books, or they'll go to counselors or faith healers or all kinds of things, but they will not spend time every day studying His Word with Him.

John 16:13 (ESV) — 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Often I've met people that seem to think that the Holy Spirit is just going to automatically put all the right answers in their minds and that they don't have to do a thing on their own. While the Holy Spirit is certainly capable of doing that, and on occasion even will, the normal, regular way the Holy Spirit operates in our lives is to draw us to the Word of God in our Bibles and inspire us to study it. When we study our bibles with Him, then he guides us through His Word to show us all Truth. The more we study, the more He reveals to us through His Word, and the more we grow to be more like Jesus.

I could talk all day long about this but really I just desperately want people to know and understand that everything they could possibly want or need is in God's Word and His Word is sufficient to meet all our needs if we will only study it.

Part 2

I've had many people tell me they "can't study the bible" for various reasons even though the one major thing God wants and in fact commands us to do, is to study His Word.

1 Peter 2:2–32 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

God's Word is our food; it feeds the new nature we were given at our salvation. Without it, we cannot grow; without a regular diet of His Word, we become sick spiritually; we backslide (at the best) and we don't experience victory or God's peace.

Matthew 4:44 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Jesus quoted this from the OT:

Deuteronomy 8:33 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Speaking of Manna, I'd like to share something about that with you too:

Exodus 16:4–54 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”

Feeding on the manna is a picture of us getting our daily spiritual nutrition through God's Word. It's His Word that strengthens us, changes us from the inside out, heals us, enables us to do His will etc. Without it, we're only fooling ourselves because we're not relying on Him, we're relying on our own strength and we don't have any. If we don't study His Word daily, we're literally starving the new nature He gave us at salvation and causing it to be weak and ineffective.  just as the Jews couldn't live on yesterdays manna, so we can't live without time spent with Him today in His Word.  His Word is our milk (1 Pet. 2:2), bread (Matt. 4:4), meat (1 Cor. 3:1–2; Heb. 5:11–14), and honey (Ps. 119:103).

Note that without a steady diet of studying His Word with Him, we are easy prey for false teachers and cults.

Matthew 22:2929 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

Without that steady diet of studying His Word with Him, we cannot experience His promises, such as this one...notice that we get that Grace and Peace through studying!

2 Peter 1:2–42 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

So, when we don't study, it leaves us bereft of many of God's promises and His help, for we're not being obedient to Him.

Now, about the problem of not being able to study. We know for a fact from God's Word that God never expects us to do anything that He doesn't give us the capability of doing. In other words, He will never tell us to do something we are incapable of doing. We might be incapable of doing it without His help, but with His help we can do everything He tells us to do.

Satan WILL try and convince us that we cannot study God's Word because that's how we defeat him and he certainly doesn't want that! He uses all kinds of tricks to get us not to study regularly. There's the standard, "I don't have time". Well, then you need to make time. That's not what I say, that's what God says. Your flesh will also rebel and you won't "feel like it" at times. Again, God says it doesn't matter what we "feel like". We are to study anyway. Our lives don't belong to us. It's not up to us to decide if we have the time or if we feel like it. The Master who bought us has told us to do this and expects us to obey Him. Then there's always the one where Satan confuses us and we feel that we can't concentrate well enough to study. When that happens, it should be a big RED FLAG that you're being messed with and that Satan doesn't want you to study! Why? Because God is not a God of confusion! That's Satan's hand, not God's!

1 Corinthians 14:3333 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

God tells us that we are to put Him first and submit to Him. He also tells us to resist the devil. As I've said many times before, every time we take a single step toward God, God rejoices and blesses us for it. This is especially true concerning studying His Word with Him.

James 4:7–87 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

He's not going to let Satan have you unless you yourself insist by not studying His Word. If instead, you come near to Him--and you can't get any nearer then His Word, He will come near to you. That's a promise! We're told to expect Satan to try and stop us from being obedient and that we need to be alert for that. We're also told to use "self control".

1 Peter 5:8–98 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

It takes self control to stick to a regular scheduled study time, but the great part is that the more you obey, the more self control and faithfulness you will have because the Lord Himself will grow it in you! Those are both fruit of the Spirit--the Holy Spirit who is guiding you as You study God's Word with Him.

One other reason I've heard for not studying is "I'm not smart enough" or words to that effect. The apostles were uneducated fishermen!!!! We all have more "education" then they did! We don't need education or a high IQ to study the bible. God made every single one of us. And He knows exactly what each of us can do. He provides His Holy Spirit to help each of us in whatever way we need so that we can understand His Word.

In fact, there are many people with a great many degrees in theology that don't have the first clue what God's Word means! And there are just as many youngsters with little education or IQ that DO know His Word for the Lord has revealed it to them.

Matthew 11:25–2625 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

1 Corinthians 1:2020 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

John 14:2626 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Notice that our Lord says that the Holy Spirit WILL teach us, He doesn't say that He will "try to if we're smart enough". God has also provided us with a great many wonderful teachers to help us as well as commentaries and study guides. While we have to have discernment in choosing which ones to do, at least here on FH you know we won't post anything that isn't from an approved teacher. (approved by God, not me)

Friends, please don't let Satan, your flesh or the world stop you from studying God's Word with Him. It's the greatest privilege we have in this world once we're saved and through it we are given all we need for this life. When you don't, you are giving up so many blessings because so many of them are contingent on us studying His Word and knowing it....

Ephesians 1:18–20 (NIV) — 18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

I see people hurting and I hurt for them and I want so desperately to help them know what the Lord can and will do for them, but most simply will not pick up their bibles and study them every day..... Sorry, but this is something that I pray for each member here every day....because it's so very important and I desperately want to see each and every person grow and reach the potential that God has for them and get every single possible reward that the Lord has for them. When I pray, I imagine myself standing in Heaven and cheering each and every member here on as the Lord presents their rewards to them on the day of the Bema Judgment. Unfortunately that won't happen until everyone starts studying His Word daily and really putting Him first....
