Something about our children that's always bothered me...

When I was 1st saved, I thought that surely there were lots of other born again Christians - somewhere, but that somehow I had just managed to miss them all my life except for a few encounters here and there across the years. I'd gone to church every Sunday but had never heard the gospel preached and had never met anyone that lived differently from the rest of the world. It seemed so strange.....The Lord did make sure that I met some good solid Christians shortly after that though, so I was very happy then. But one thing bothered me... why weren't the children being raised differently then the way the unsaved raised theirs????

Mine were all grown by the time I was saved, except for Jenn who was a teenager, so I couldn't very well start over, but her last few teen years were most certainly different then those of my other children!

What bothered me most though was that we (we being those of us who are saved) taught our children carefully from the time they were born to avoid danger like fire; not to play with matches, not to touch a hot stove, not to go into the street, to look both ways before they crossed the street, etc. We were careful to make sure that we protected them and taught them to be as safe as possible, which is good and what we should do....but we didn't teach them about the biggest danger to them of all! That danger was/is totally ignored for some reason.
We failed to teach them about Satan who's greatest desire is to destroy their lives and kill them because he hates them so much. Why???

I used to imagine what it might have been like if I'd been saved before my children were born. Teaching my children from the time they were at my breast that they had an enemy who hated them and wanted to hurt them as much as they could and teaching them how they could stay safe from Satan and his demons and that ultimately the only true safety was in Christ. Teaching them about Satan's schemes so they wouldn't fall for them; warning them that their emotions, their flesh, would betray them if they didn't have Jesus in their hearts and that they needed God's Word in their hearts and minds all the time to protect themselves from their enemy. I bet that every child would be eager for the protection of Jesus and would grow up wanting Him in their hearts and would make that transaction with Him just as soon as they were able to fully understand what was required of them.

As I continued to grow in my faith though, I realized that there was something else we failed to teach our children. We were good at making sure they went to school, got good grades, and encouraging them to further their education so they'd do well in this world, but we didn't do anything to ensure that they'd do well in their next life! We just hoped they'd make it to heaven and that was good enough. But what if we'd had that attitude about this life, and just hoped they'd make it to elementary school? If we did that, and they wound up doing well in this life anyway, it wouldn't be because of our teaching. So why do we do that with their eternal lives which are far more important then this life????

By the time I realized this, even Jenn was grown and married and had her own children. So there wasn't much I could do for my kids, but I was determined to do my best by my grandchildren.

Can you imagine though what it might look like if we did teach them that as well? If we taught them from birth to focus on eternal values instead of earthly ones and taught them to strive for eternal rewards instead of earthly ones? If we literally taught them as Jesus told us, to store up treasure for themselves in heaven and how they could do that? If we stressed the importance of their life to come over this one?

If we mothers did as the Lord commanded and literally taught our children about their enemy and how to stay safe from him; about Jesus who could save them from their enemy and from their sins and give them a wonderful life, and about how to store up treasure in heaven to ensure the best eternal life possible, we could raise up another Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Elijah, Peter, John, Paul, Deborah, Ruth, Mary, Elizabeth, Priscilla, or Martha!

What an awesome task the Lord has given to mothers! It's the most important job in the whole world. All mothers want the best for their children, but we're blessed in that we know that this life is no where near the "best". The best is our life to come!

I wish I could go back in time and raise my children this way...the way the Lord tells us to in His Word. To talk to them about the Lord and His ways from the time they were at my breast, to speak of His wonders, His love for them and His great plans for them, to teach them to beware of their enemy, how to recognize the enemy of their souls and how to be protected from him and how to store up treasure in heaven for themselves. To teach them to store up His Word in their hearts and minds, to reflect on it continually, to make it part of them and to apply it to their lives for His Word is life for them. Of course to do that, I would have to make sure that all that was first true for me so I could model it for them.

What a challenge! And you know what? During the Millennium, I think we'll finally see parents raising their children this way. I can't wait to see how those children turn out! The thing is, we don't have to wait till then. Those of us who are blessed enough to be saved when they're young and just starting to have children, can raise their children God's way now. I can guarantee you that God will bless you for it and that your children will rise up and call you blessed as well and you will all know that you've done all you could with God's help to store up treasure for yourselves in heaven so that your life all through eternity will be a rich one!
It's too late for me, but I can do my best to encourage my children now and help teach my grandchildren that we're different from the rest of the world. That we have a fantastic future waiting for us and that we have the opportunity now to make it an even better future!

 

Taking Thoughts Captive

2 Corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
 
What most of us don't realize is that taking our thoughts captive and making them obedient to Christ is not a suggestion from God, it is a command. This is how we overcome Satan's schemes and the world's influence, and our sin nature. Taking our thoughts captive is one of the most important practical things that the Lord gives us so that we can live a life of victory here and now.

The Lord is quite aware of our thoughts and feelings and He wants us to be aware of them as well and more then that, He expects us to take control of them. While the world teaches us that we are at the mercy of our feelings and thoughts, God’s Word tells us that instead we are to be in conscious control of them at all times.

 
Think of it this way. We know how powerful God’s Word is, well, being made in His image, our words are also very powerful. We know that God’s Word is just as powerful when we’re thinking it, reading it, or speaking it right? Our words are also powerful in all those ways. In other words, the words we think, our thoughts, are “words” and they are powerful! It is our thoughts that produce our emotions.

Even the secular world is aware that it's our thoughts that create our emotions and that the way to stop feelings such as worry, fear, depression etc is to change our thoughts. The problem is that on our own we can't be really successful. It's only through working with God and replacing those sinful thoughts and feelings with God's Word that we can have success.

Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he Proverbs 27:19As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man. *
 
What the Lord wants us to do is take every thought we have captive and make it obedient to Christ. How do we do this and what exactly does that mean?

When you have a thought that is saying something like, “What if such and such happens though”. You know, those fantasy thoughts of “what if my husband died and I had no one” and things like that; God says to “capture” that thought. In other words stop it cold. As soon as you catch yourself thinking something along those lines, you tell yourself to “Stop!” You stop the thought and then you make that thought obedient to Christ.

How do you make it obedient to Christ? You replace the lie (because it is a lie) with God’s Truth. In this case since we’re dealing with fantasy type thoughts here, perhaps you could replace it with these verses:

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6:31-33 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.


Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.


You don’t have to worry about remembering an entire verse or anything like that, as long as you get the point that God is trying to get across to you in the verse itself. So while it is best to be able to use the actual verses, you can at first simply replace the “bad” thought with something like, “God will meet all my needs, I don’t have to worry” until you’re able to actually recall the verses that the Lord gives you.

No matter what the thought is, it is a lie if it is causing you worry, fear, stress, depression etc.


1 John 4:16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.


This is what the renewing of your mind is which Paul refers to here:


Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Ephesians 4:22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.


This doesn’t happen by some mystical force, at least not entirely. This happens through good hard work on our part. Then when we do our part, replacing the lies with God’s Word, with His Truth, God then renews our minds, and little by little our attitudes are made new.
So, for example: You're depressed/worried or whatever about money; you stop that and think to yourself, any or all of these things: "God is my provider" "God will take care of me" All I have to do is seek Him, and do my best to do His Will and He will take care of my needs".

Now, I can show you in the bible, a verse for every one of those statements, and later, you'll be able to as well; but for right now, just telling yourself the truth is enough. Let's say for example that I don't feel good physically and I then start to think, "why isn't God helping me...how much of this do I have to go through...isn't He going to help me"? etc. I then suddenly realize that I'm having those thoughts and starting to feel down, so I literally stop the thoughts. Let's say I realize it when I'm actually in the middle of that last line......"isn't He going to help me". I'm in the middle of that line so the actual words that I've thought are ....."isn't He going" and I stop it right there and instead I and make them obedient to Christ. I would then say, "No! God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble and He is already working this out for my good!"

Remember, if you're ever "stuck" and can't think of a "comeback" to one of the negative thoughts you're taking captive, you can always cry out to the Lord for help! (and He WILL help you!) If you get into a situation like that, ask the Lord for help, take the thought captive, simply saying, "I know that isn't true and that the Truth is in God's Word, I simply have to find it." Then open your bible, continuing to ask the Lord for help and guidance and look for that truth till you find it! Then afterward thank the Lord for the opportunity He gave you to learn something new.

So the Lord has told us to take our thoughts captive and make them obedient to Him and He tells us how to do that and what kind of thoughts and feelings we should be allowing. There's many verses that show this, but this is one of the main ones about our thoughts:

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Any thought that doesn't line up with this verse then, is a lie. It's either from Satan, the world or our sin nature and it needs to be taken captive. Another way to look at it is that anything that's not of faith, is sin so we all have lots of thoughts to take captive!
 
Romans 14:23 b — and everything that does not come from faith is sin. 

The only thoughts you have to "take captive" are the ones that aren't true; The negative, false, the lies, etc. The thoughts you take captive are the ones that say things like:

God's abandoned me; God isn't going to rescue me or help me etc this time; God hates me; God doesn't care what's happening in my life right now; "If God doesn't help me now that means I've done something terrible to displease Him." "If I don't pay the bill I'll lose my house". "I'm going to wind up losing my house". "no one cares." " No one can or will help me." "I'm stupid". "I'm ugly" "I'm such a horrible sinner God couldn't possibly forgive me". "I keep sinning so that's why God is letting this happen." "God hates me". "God only cares about my spiritual life not my physical life". "I can't stop sinning so why bother trying". "I can't stop sinning so I must not be saved." "Why me." "I've been good so why do I have to suffer? God isn't fair!" "I don't know what to do, the Lord never speaks to me" "I can't hear or understand what He is telling me to do". "I can't"

The negative "what ifs" thoughts and fantasies as well as any sinful "what if" thoughts, day dreams and fantasies.

Fantasizing/day dreaming about things you know are sinful or that could lead you into sin; Fantasizing about things you have no control over to the point that they upset and worry you.

It is one thing to consider what you would do "if something happened", but quite another thing to allow yourself to dwell over and over about "bad things" happening and how it would affect you since you have no control of those things at all and it goes against the commands of God not to do that. He tells us outright not to worry about tomorrow; that He is in control and we are to trust Him. Therefore when we do this, we are sinning and the root of that sin or at least one of the roots is a lack of faith and trust in God and a lack of belief that He loves you and will care for you and help you.


These are the kinds of thoughts that we are to "stop" and "take captive". All other thoughts we can allow to continue.


As you can tell by the examples, I've had a lot of experience in thinking those kind of thoughts and could give another dozen examples easily.

Stopping the thoughts and taking them captive is work. I'm not going to kid you about that. The alternative though is to continue to be worry, be angry, upset, stressed and depressed and to continue to allow your emotions and thoughts to control you rather then controlling them the way our Lord wants us to.


I can tell you though what will happen when you start to do this.

At first you won't realize that you're having the thoughts until they're completed and you're starting to worry etc. At that point you'll stop them and make them captive. As time goes on and you continue to practice this daily, you'll start to recognize those kind of thoughts sooner and quicker until eventually--(this usually takes months though) you'll realize they're starting practically before the first "word" of the thought is formed! Again you'll continue to stop it and take it captive.

As more time goes by and you continue to do this daily, you'll begin to realize that these kind of thoughts are occurring less and less frequently too. It's almost like when you first start doing this, you find yourself in the middle of a flood of these negative type thoughts, and as time goes by and you consistently practice taking them captive, the flood slows down to a trickle and you're catching them sooner and sooner. This is very encouraging and shows you how much progress you've made! You'll see by this too that you're actually not worrying, or fearful or depressed much anymore either! It's amazing!

Lest someone think that this is the same or similar to "positive thinking", it really is not! The key here is God and God's Word! At the same time that you're striving to stop and take these thoughts captive, you need to be in His Word and using His Word to replace them with. Your words won't help, His Words will and it is God who will be changing you!

I know I told you that at first it was OK to "paraphrase" and use your own words and it is, but you should make every attempt to immediately or as soon as possible, get to your bible and find what His Word really says and use that instead of your own words. Write it down because you'll surely need that Word again!


So you can see too that stopping your thoughts in their tracks when they're negative and not true, and replacing them with God's Truth, not only is being obedient to the Lord but it helps you know His Word, and can make your relationship with Him closer too.

We all pretty well know what our thought patterns are and where our weakness are as well as our sins. Plus all we have to do is ask the Lord for help and He will show us and He will show us where in His Word the Truth is to combat those thoughts and sins.

I would suggest however that to start you should first pray asking the Lord for help, then go through your bible with His help and write down those verses that are most applicable to your thoughts. That way you'll have your ammunition ready when those thoughts come and you won't be fumbling for your gun.


I'll list some of the ones I've used and some I still use which might help everyone get started later, but as I said, the best way is to ask the Lord to help you and then write down those you need the most to get started with. Once you have the hang of it though, don't just rely on those verses you start with, dig into His Word and find more! When you're reading His Word in your regular reading time, and you see one that you know will help, stop and write it down too. It won't be long before you'll have so many that you won't know what to do with them all and that will show you even more just how "wrong" and sinful those thoughts we are stopping are, and just how loving and caring our God is toward us! In fact, the Lord will often purposely bring you to scriptures each day that will help you.  He loves working in partnership with us! (by the way, you don't have to worry about remembering the chapter and verse etc, for this, just the words themselves) I'll list some scriptures to get you started at the end of this post.

To reiterate: The first step is to ask the Lord to show you whenever you have a thought or feeling that is contrary to His Word, or that is not good for you. That's not only the first step, it's the most important one of all.

The second step is to begin to pay attention to yourself, to what you're thinking and feeling. If your wife is willing to help you, that can be a huge help right there and for others any spouse or close Christian friend that's willing to help would be great! You can ask them to let you know any time you are showing signs of feeling anger, worry, stress, fear, depression etc or anytime you're beginning to speak things that are negative and contrary to God's Word. Tell them that anytime they notice you doing that, to please stop you immediately and let you know. Ask them if they are willing, to ask the Lord to help them notice when you're doing these things.

That way you have the Lord and your family helping you spot it at first. After awhile, probably not very long lol, you'll begin to get the hang of it and you'll be spotting it yourself just before they say something. That's your first sign that you're on the right track and that you're beginning to be consciously aware of what you're thinking and feeling. After awhile again, it will be second nature to you so that you won't really have to think about it consciously. You'll just "know". It's almost like having a computer program running in the background of your mind all the time monitoring your thoughts and feelings lol.

The third step: When you are told, either by the Lord or by family or you see it yourself that you're thinking and/or feeling in ways you shouldn't be, then you immediately tell yourself to stop.

Let's say for example that I don't feel good physically and I then start to think, "why isn't God helping me...how much of this do I have to go through...isn't He going to help me"? etc. I then suddenly realize that I'm having those thoughts and starting to feel down, so I literally stop the thoughts. Let's say I realize it when I'm actually in the middle of that last line......"isn't He going to help me". I'm in the middle of that line so the actual words that I've thought are ....."isn't He going" and I stop it right there and 


(The fourth step) I make them obedient to Christ. I would then say, "No! God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble and He is already working this out for my good!"

So now I have taken the thoughts captive by stopping them and I have brought them to obedience in Christ by replacing the thoughts with His Truth. By the way, the verses I used above in my reply to myself were these:

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.


The fifth and last step: Then last but not least, I would follow His instructions on what He wants me to think about instead and so I would then change my train of thought from how I was feeling to say..."hmmm I wonder what's happening on Fresh Hope...I think I'll go see what everyone is up to there; or I could change the topic in my mind to thinking about my husband and what a big help he's been to me lately or whatever else that is good and not contrary to God's Word. I could even decide to get up and go do some chores lol The verse I'm referring to when I say He gives us instructions on what we should be thinking about is this one:

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Now all of that would probably take only a few seconds altogether. It's not a long drawn out affair. You 1 notice the thought, you 2 stop it, 3 replace it and 4 change the subject.
 
As I said though we have to become aware of our thoughts in the first place. Asking the Lord and others to make you aware of it really helps though and it won't be long before it's second nature to you!  Here's a little bit from another teacher that may help you, and will show you too that it's not just me making this up lol
 
Taking Thoughts Captive

How do we take our thoughts captive in Christ? Are there words that must be said? Do we invoke Jesus’ name? Do we just try to think of something else? Do we pray to have satan bound in Jesus’ name so he cannot affect us? How do we know If the thoughts are from an evil entity or just our sin nature? What is the correct way to deal with thoughts that cross our mind and are not holy and serving of God

A. We take thoughts captive by concentrating on Scripture that refutes the thought, replacing evil with good in our minds. It’s an application of the theory of displacement which holds that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. At the conscious level we can only think one thought at a time, so focusing on the good thought will force the bad thought out of our mind. It doesn’t matter whether the thought comes from the devil or from our own sin nature, it’s all the same.

In Phil 4:8 Paul told us, Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. By doing so we can take evil thoughts captive before they can enter our mind and take root there.

Controlling Our Thoughts

Q. After reading your answer to a previous question I sent in, I got to thinking about how do we know when to blame the devil vs. blaming ourselves for the bad thoughts that come into our mind?

A. Assessing the blame for where your thoughts come from isn’t important. Whether it comes from your sin nature or straight from the devil, it’s all the same. 2 Cor. 10:3-5 says we’re to take captive any thought that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. We should not allow any thought come into our mind that contradicts what we know about how God would have us behave. As you learn to immediately reject those thoughts and ask God to forgive you for them, you’ll find yourself having fewer of them. This is what James meant when he said, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Remember, you don't have to worry about remembering the chapter and verse etc, for this, just the words themselves; and you don't have to use the entire verse or verses either, but just the part that pertains to your thoughts--as long as you're not taking it out of context. For example:

Isaiah 43:1-2 But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

In the above passage, you might just need to use this part:
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

or maybe this part:
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you

or whatever portion you need for the particular thought you're replacing.

Out of Body Experiences

What is an out of body experience?

An out of body experience, also known as astral projection, is supposed to be the phenomenon when a person's consciousness is detached from the physical body and travels or exists outside of the body. During these experiences, the person is aware of his surroundings and is often aware of what is being said around him.

Are Out of Body Experiences real?

There are a lot of reports from people who claim to have had various out of body experiences. The problem is testing them. Some people claim to have died during surgery, in emergency rooms, etc., who were aware of conversations going on in separate rooms while they were being worked on by doctors.

Some of these "astral projections" seem to be generated by trauma, death and then being revived, drug use, and occult practices where altered states of consciousness are sought. There are people who claim to be able to do it at will. Generally, they seem to occur at unpredictable times.

One of the explanations offered for out of body experiences is that the person has undergone a trauma or altered state of consciousness and is not actually traveling outside of his body, but is imagining it the way a person will experience a dream but in a much more "real" impression than normal. The brain, after all, is highly complicated and can produce all sorts of images that can seem real.

What about 2 Cor. 12:1-4?

"Boasting is necessary, though it is not profitable; but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a man was caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I know how such a man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows— 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak," (2 Cor. 12:1-4).

This Scripture is often used to support out of body experiences, but it cannot be properly used this way. In Jewish cosmology, there are three heavens. The first heaven deals with the atmospheric region (Deuteronomy 11:17; 28:12; Judges 5:4; Acts 14:17). The second heaven deals with the region of outer space (Psalm 19:4,6; Jeremiah 8:2; Isaiah 13:10). The third heaven is God's dwelling place (1 Kings 8:30; Psalm 2:4; Matthew 5:16).

So, when Paul says that he knew someone who was caught up to the third heaven, he was speaking about entering into the dwelling place of God. What is important is that it occurred either in the body or out of the body, of which he did not know. Also, it is possible that this occurrence Paul speaks about, which is probably about himself, might very well be in reference to the instance when he was stoned and left for dead.

"But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead," (Acts 14:19).

Are out of body experiences harmful?

The Bible tells us that we are to avoid any occult practices. Astral projection is just such an event. Essentially, it amounts to what the Bible calls divination and sorcery and is to be avoided. In addition, it may very well open up individuals to demonic oppression since it is in violation of the Scriptures and is dabbling in the spiritual realm in a manner not approved by Scripture.

Lev. 19:26, "You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor practice divination or soothsaying."

Lev. 19:31, "Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God."

Deut. 18:9-11, "When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. 10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead."

2 Chronicles 33:6, "And he made his sons pass through the fire in the valley of Ben-hinnom; and he practiced witchcraft, used divination, practiced sorcery, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger."

Here's a quote about out of body experiences and how people can be and are trained to have them:  (I know this is true because I used to do it myself before I was saved)

Silva Method (formerly Silva Mind Control [SMC]) was developed by José Silva. Over six million students in 71 countries have taken the Silva International courses (formerly Silva Mind Control International). Their minds are supposed to be able to tap into any source in the universe for the information, including the minds of other men, alive or dead.

This shows that out of body experiences can also be had through hypnosis, or self hypnosis:

Hypnosis is nothing new. It has been used for thousands of years by witchdoctors, spirit mediums, shamans, Hindus, Buddhists, and yogis. But the increasing popularity of hypnosis for healing in the secular world has influenced many in the professing church to accept hypnosis as a means of treatment. Both non-Christian and professing Christian medical doctors, dentists, psychiatrists, and psychologists are recommending and using hypnosis.

Although a hypnotist may encourage only a light or medium trance, he cannot prevent a hypnotized subject from spontaneously plunging into the danger zone, which may include a sense of separation from the body, seeming clairvoyance, hallucination, mystical states similar to those described by Eastern mystics, and even what hypnotism researcher Ernest Hilgard describes as "demonic possession." We would argue that hypnosis is occultic at any trance level, but at its deeper levels, hypnosis is unmistakably occult.

.... One researcher makes some interesting observations concerning why he would classify hypnosis as part of the occult (Peace, Prosperity, and the Coming Holocaust, pp. 119-120):

"One reason for calling hypnotherapy a religious ritual is the fact that it produces mysterious effects that leave any investigator who approaches it as science thoroughly puzzled: (1) under hypnosis administered by psychiatrists, persons who have never had any contact with UFOs can be stimulated to 'remember' UFO abductions that conform in detail to those described by supposed genuine abductees; (2) hypnosis also leads to spontaneous 'memories' of past and future lives, about one-fifth involving existence on other planets; (3) hypnotic trance also duplicates the experiences common under the stimulation of psychedelic drugs, TM, and other forms of Yoga and Eastern meditation; (4) hypnosis also creates spontaneous psychic powers, clairvoyance, out-of-body experiences, and the whole range of occult phenomena; and (5) the experience of so-called clinical death is also produced under hypnosis.

....The connection between hypnosis and Eastern mysticism is clear. At varying depths of the hypnotic trance, patients describe experiences that are identical to the cosmic consciousness and self-realization induced by yogic trance. They experience first of all a deep peace, then detachment from the body, then release from identity with one's own small self to merge with the universe, and the feeling that they are everything and have no limitation upon what they can experience or become: i.e., God-consciousness "in which time, space, and ego are supposedly transcended, leaving pure awareness of the primal nothingness from which all manifested creation comes."

I wanted to write about this because I was asked about it and because we hear a lot about this today.  Out of body experiences are pretty common in today's world as are near death experiences, both of which are really pretty much the same thing.

Many of you know that before I was saved I was heavily into the new age and occult. Because of that involvement, I had many out of body experiences.  I literally taught myself how to do it through reading new age and occult books.

The new agers and occultists today, are very careful about how they word things. I'm talking about those who write the books and do seminars etc, not the common every day person, although even they use the same words since they parrot what they've heard.  There's a reason why they're so careful about how they word things and the reason, to put it bluntly, is to trap Christians. They say things in such a way that whatever they're talking about sounds like something that can be done, used, in conjunction with the Christian faith, like a supplement to it; something that will only make your faith more real, not take away from it or replace it, and certainly not a sin.

Obviously if a Christian knows the Lord personally, and knows His Word very well, then he's not going to fall for it.  But let me tell you that at that time in my life, I did know God's Word, and I knew it quite well!  I knew right from wrong.  What I didn't have though was a close personal relationship with the Lord, and I was no longer reading/studying his Word daily and hadn't been for some time.
  Therefore, I got caught in Satan's trap.  And this IS from Satan.  Don't let there be any doubt in your mind about that!

Oh, the out of body experience may be more peaceful and loving then anything you've ever felt in your life, but it's still from Satan and it's a trap.  Satan is a master deceiver, he always has been.  He isn't going to show you horrible things, he's going to show you things that you want to see in order to get you where he wants you.

The whole thing of out of body experiences and near death experiences, is nothing more then what happens, or one of the things that can happen, when you empty your mind of everything - which is something the Bible cautions against.  According to God's Word, we're not to empty our minds and we're not supposed to just let whatever wants to float around in our minds be there.  Instead, He tells us to be in control of our minds and what's in them all the time.  He tells us to be alert and on guard against anything that goes against what His Word says.  Those things we're not to allow in our minds at all, for any reason.

Does that sound a little extreme to you?  It does to many. As always though, the Lord knows what He's talking about.  We say, "but it's only thoughts...words...they can't hurt anything".  But God says differently.  He says our words and thoughts have power and that His Word is the ultimate power.
He tells us that it's what we think that makes us what we are. That it's our thoughts that ultimately cause our emotions and our actions.  In Proverbs 15:26 we're told that the Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked...their thoughts...not just their words or actions!  Isaiah 55:7 says —Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.In Mark 7:20–21 and other places, Jesus tells us that it's the thoughts of our hearts that make us unclean, that cause us to sin. In Ephesians 2:3 we're told —All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. * etc. (notice that the words in bold are talking of feelings and thoughts)

You know me, I could go on for pages showing you what the bible says about our thoughts and how we're to be in control of them at all times. I needed to establish this here though to show that when we are not in control of our thoughts, and allow or even attempt to force ourselves to "empty our minds" and enter another state of consciousness, that we are doing Satan's work for him. Out of body and near death experiences are simply more of Satan's deceptions to lure us away from the Lord and His Word. 

Being a master deceiver, Satan again isn't going to do things that are going to look like they're obviously against God - hence the feelings of love and peace people often feel in these experiences. He is going to show you things that he knows you'll find ways to incorporate with whatever you know about God already.  Remember that when he tempted Eve, he caused her to question what she knew of God and what He'd said to her.  He said, "Did God really say..." He wants to twist God's Words in our minds and the easiest way to do that is to get us to do it for him, and so when you get involved in this stuff you'll find yourself asking, "did God really say"...  Trying to find loopholes to God's Word.  You'd be amazed at how many you can find too when you start trying to.  Of course there aren't really any loopholes, but you make them up because you have to in order to justify what you're doing.  So although you may know His Word says not to do something, you will make the excuse of "well, that was just for back then because they didn't understand..." or something like that. 

The way it's set up is to first trap people, because we humans just love experiences, especially "supernatural" ones.  After they're well and truly trapped, they begin to look at what they're doing as a supplement to their faith (if they're a christian at all).  Then, as they continue on this path, they come to a point where they decide it's not a supplement but rather an extension.  In other words, you begin to see the Bible as being God's elementary school education, and what you're doing now as His high school education.  So you see yourself as well beyond and above ordinary "Christians".  Of course eventually even that facade falls away and you "realize" that you don't need God or the bible because you can do everything yourself.

Obviously everything I've related is from my own experiences and shows how this affects someone who at least thinks they're a Christian at the time they begin to play around with the new age or occult things...including out of body experiences.

But what about someone who has an out of body experience that isn't "trying" to have one and knows nothing about them?  What if the person isn't a Christian and knows nothing about God?  That really changes nothing. Out of body experiences are still tools of Satan, things he uses to draw people away from God and His Word.  While the actual experience can happen "naturally" for any number of reasons, such as when under anesthesia, (I had it happen that way as well) that doesn't change the fact that Satan can and will use it to both pull someone away from God and draw them closer toward him instead.  Even someone who knows nothing about them, even if they know nothing about God, will start telling other people about their experience when it does happen because as I said, we tend to love things that seem to be supernatural experiences.  It makes us feel "special", "unique". So we tell other people and eventually do what we always do and wind up talking to others who've had similar experiences and eventually wind up involved in the new age or occult garbage.  Just because the person isn't aware that Satan is behind it, doesn't change the fact that he is.

What can we do to protect ourselves?  Exactly what God tells us to do.  Be alert and be aware of the devils schemes (which is why I'm writing this). When we're aware of his schemes we can then avoid them by again doing what the Lord tells us to and taking control of our thoughts, emotions and imaginations.

How to find God's Will

How to find God's Will When You're Experiencing a Problem, Going through a Trial, being tempted, or whatever you may be going through.

Whenever we have a problem we have to deal with, we need to ask ourselves,
"how does the Lord want me to handle this?". We may have other questions too such as "why" it's happening, or what we should or shouldn't do about it.


To get your answer to those and other questions, you go to your bible to find out how God wants you to handle it. Most importantly though you pray and ask the Lord to guide you as you look through His Word to see how He wants you to respond to your current situation. Why? Because that's how the Lord speaks to us today. While He's perfectly capable of speaking to us with His voice or in other ways, He generally speaks to us through His Word, so when we need to find an answer, that's where we need to go to talk to Him. Otherwise the only answers you're libel to get are a nudging to go to His Word or silence.

I'm going to pretend that the problem is co workers harassing you at work. Another word for someone that's harassing us is persecute:


Persecute means:

To oppress or harass with ill-treatment,
To annoy persistently; bother.
to subject to harassing or cruel treatment,
to oppress, torment, frustrate, harass, etc.


If you have a "concordance" or "index" in your bible, look up the word, "persecute" If not, you can use an online bible and search for the word on it. Not every verse with that word in it is going to be what we're looking for, but it's a good place to start and it's pretty easy to weed out the ones that aren't going to be helpful.

What you'll want to do is read the ones you think may apply to your situation, but you need to read them "in context" and not just that particular verse. If you only read that verse you'd miss a lot of what God has to say to you about it..


Just to give you some good ideas of words to look up when you're having a problem, going through a trial or something like that, let me give you some common words that are always good to look up during these times. You can also use these words to look up if you don't get enough information on the word you choose to look up first:

suffer
enemy
trouble
test
discipline
trial

Or you could look up a word or words that you notice show up a lot in the verses you already found. In the ones I'll list for you, you'll notice the word
"perseverance" shows up a lot, so you could look that word up and see what other verses with that word in it say.

Since we're pretending you're being persecuted, I've looked up the word "persecute" in the New Testament, and I've picked out the ones that I think are the most helpful for us.


Remember, when you're doing this on your own, you need to read them in context too so you know how God wants you to respond and why. For that reason, I'm going to include verses that either come before or follow the one with the word persecute in it for you here.

As you read each scripture, you'd ask yourself the following questions:
A. What God is saying to you about how you should handle your situation now,
B. What you should expect or why
C.
What He will do for you.


Some of the scriptures won't have all three of those in it, but answer as many of those three questions as you can for each scripture.


I've chosen 7 scriptures for our pretend problem. All you have to do is choose scriptures that looked like they might have something to do with what you're going through. I'll post the ones I chose here so you can see why it's important to read them in context. Obviously when you look up the scripture, you'll first read the verse with that word in it, but then look both back before that verse and after that verse to see what's pertinent to your situation now. (Remember, you're looking for the answers to those three questions I posted above as you read the following scriptures)

1. Matthew 5:44–47
44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

2. John 15:20
20 Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

3. Romans 12:12–21
12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

1 Corinthians 4:11–13

11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

5. 2 Corinthians 12:7–10
7 To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

6. 2 Thessalonians 1:4–10
4 Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.
5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

7. 2 Timothy 3:12–13
12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.


Having answered the 3 questions or as many as you could for each scripture you read, you would now do the following:

1. Make a list of steps that you can take to do what God wants you to do about this.

2. Considering everything you've learned now, write down what you think the Lord may be either trying to teach you or help you practice.

3. Ask the Lord to help you respond to this problem the way He's now shown you that He wants you to.

Now that you are all done, all your questions should be answered, and you now know exactly what the Lord wants your attitude to be and what He wants you to do. The most important part of this entire process though is that we should be talking to the Lord about it asking His guidance before we look up the verses, while we're looking them up and studying them and after we've done so. We need to remember that He's right there with us, guiding us and that most of all, He wants to talk to us through His Word and make it personal to us. This way we not only get our questions answered, and answered correctly, but we also become closer to our Lord. This is how the Lord wants us to get our answers for right after talking about trials, He tells us:

James 1:5–8 (NIV)
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

Great Christian Fiction

I also enjoy Christian Fiction, and there are a few that can be life changing because they're so very, very good. These are the books I've found to be just that good:
I highly recommend the books:
 
A Voice in The Wind -Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers. 

 An Echo in the Darkness-Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers.
As Sure As the Dawn -Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers.

Here's a bit about all 3:
Francine Rivers has once again captured the Roman empire of the 1st century AD. Rome, Ephesus, and Israel come alive with compelling people and small historic details. The theme of God's love and the power of forgiveness are beautifully shown through the lives of these characters. The ending was so powerful, I'm sure it will stay with me for quite some time.

....The MARK trilogy is set in the Roman Empire, shortly after the fall of Jerusalem. Using a Hebrew slave girl (Hadassah) and a German gladiator (Atretes; think the film GLADIATOR) as the main characters, three books are crafted around themes of faith, redemption, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Rivers is one of the best at writing characters and those that she creates here are absolutely convincing -- flawed and heroic on multiple layers, with developmental conflicts that relate to and parallel modern times almost seamlessly.

As with most Rivers books, this one if life-changing. This series is what the Lord used to bring me back to Him after 3 years of trying things my own way--what a gentle Lord He is. I highly recommend this series. The characters are believable, you feel for them, and you get a better sense of how God works in life (even though it is fiction). It will challenge your walk with the Lord, in a good way. 

Each night I've wound up sobbing my heart out to the Lord when I'm reading it because it touches me so very deeply. These are fiction books but they're so very powerful! I've read most of her other books too and they're all good, but to me this is more like it was actually inspired by God Himself and when I read it, the Lord speaks directly to me from it. It's really amazing and very much appropriate for us who know we are in the end times.

Next are some Christian fiction books by Bill Myers that can also be life changing. If you let it, it can really open your eyes into an even deeper relationship with the Lord. These books will really make you think!

Thunder in Paradise is absolutely fantastic!!!! It's got to be one of the very best I've read! It's about life during the millennium and it's so much better then the Left Behind book about this subject that it leaves it in the dust! I read this in two days because I simply couldn't put it down!

Fallen From Babel By T L Higley.

Fallen From Babel's about a university professor who teaches comparative religion who winds up accidentally being sent back in time to Babylon. He winds up in the body of the chief Magician and finds out first hand where "all religions" really lead!

TimeFlyer is an action-packed Christian science fiction action book. Steve Harrison, the main character, is a fighter pilot in the Air Force who is diligently seeking to honor God with his life. He feels directed to take the job of a test pilot for a top-secret military project in the Nevada desert. Jill, Steve's wife, is brilliant, but suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism characterized by intense concentration. She wants to be 'normal', and doesn't appreciate the gift of intelligence that God has given her. Dr. Choi Daesang escaped North Korea more than 15 years before. He is implementation director of the top-secret project. He is horrified to find that the North Koreans know where he is, and are determined to get him and his knowledge back to North Korea at any cost. The above-top-secret project, in which they are all involved, has built an aircraft that can fly back and forth in time. The first few missions go smoothly. However, the mission back 4,000 years reports physical features on Earth and in space that are totally unexpected. Steve and Jill realize they are seeing results from the global flood of Noah's time. The next mission is to fly back in time 8,000 years. Steve realizes that might be before the time of creation. He has to make a choice - fly the mission and risk the life of aircraft and crew, or refuse and risk a court-martial for disobeying orders.
