Historically, there have been only two gender options: male and female. But
popular culture is trying to change that. Facebook users can now identify
themselves as a-gender, androgynous, bi-gender, gender variant, or a host of
other alternatives. This comes on the heels of a feminist movement that insists
that a woman's sex should not impact her role or function: Biology should not
equal destiny, every woman has a right to dictate the terms of her own life, and
she can decide for herself what her womanhood means.
The Bible counters these modern trends. It says that God created two sexes
and wants this binary to serve a specific purpose: Gender, sex, and marriage
were created to illustrate the marvelous story of the covenant relationship
between Jesus Christ and His bride, the Church. Male and female exist to bear
witness to an eternal, cosmic reality. The greatest display of God's glory and
the greatest joy of human relationships come about when the deep, God-ordained
differences between men and women are not rejected, but are embraced and
celebrated.
Given the extent of gender confusion in our culture, it's more important than
ever that the church uphold the beauty of God's plan for male and female and
help men and women experience the joy and fulfillment of being exactly who He
created them to be.
